I am Georgia State Senator Candidate Furquan Stafford, and I am about to embark on a victorious journey to secure the Georgia State Senate seat in District 10, which blankets parts of Dekalb County and Henry County. As a resolute Black Republican, my passion burns with an unwavering commitment to advocate tirelessly within a controlled Republican government like Georgia for the constituents of District 10.
In the context of fostering a positive engagement with the Black community, the letter “R” in Republican can be redefined to signify “Relationships.” This reframing emphasizes the importance of building and nurturing meaningful connections, understanding, and trust between the Republican party and the Black community. It underscores a commitment to engaging in genuine, respectful, and collaborative relationships that seek to address concerns, promote dialogue, and work towards shared goals. By emphasizing Relationships over Racist, the focus is shifted towards building bridges and fostering understanding, which can be instrumental in creating a more inclusive and equitable political landscape.
While we have made significant progress in addressing overt discrimination, it’s important to recognize that systemic inequalities persist in various forms. For example, disparities in access to quality education, employment opportunities, affordable housing, and fair lending practices continue to limit the economic advancement of many Black Americans. These systemic barriers contribute to the wealth gap and perpetuate cycles of inequality that must be addressed.
Rather than advocating for reparations in the traditional sense, I believe in focusing on practical and constructive solutions to address the root causes of systemic inequality. This includes supporting policies that promote economic empowerment, access to quality education, entrepreneurship, and job creation within the Black community. Additionally, fostering mentorship, financial literacy, and access to capital for Black-owned businesses can help to create pathways to economic prosperity.
I draw inspiration from historical figures like Frederick Douglass (1818-1995), an African American social reformer and statesman, was an influential figure in the 19th century. Who advocated for equality and opportunity for all Americans, as well as from bipartisan efforts to address the challenges facing the Black community. Frederick Douglass, However, he was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party, as it was the party of abolition and emancipation during his time. By working together across party lines and embracing a spirit of unity, we can create meaningful change and build a brighter future for all Americans, regardless of race. Douglass once said, “I am a Republican, a black, dyed-in-the-wool Republican, and I never intend to belong to any other party than the party of freedom and progress.” This quote reflects his strong support for the Republican Party and its historical association with the fight for freedom and progress for African Americans.

Harnessing the power of determination and resilience, Stafford embarked on his basketball and academic odyssey following his graduation from Benjamin E. Banneker High School in 1991, nestled in the southern region of Atlanta, Georgia. In 1992, he ventured into the realm of higher education and pursued his medical studies while honing his basketball skills at McCook Community College, situated in the serene town of McCook, Nebraska. A mere enclave of eight thousand White Americans, McCook had a limited population of Black Americans, who were exclusively represented by the members of the basketball team, a modest group of eight individuals. Stafford’s remarkable journey propelled him to become the first Black American to earn an associate degree in Pre-Nursing from McCook.
His outstanding achievements did not go unnoticed, as Dr. Robert Smallfoot, the esteemed President of McCook, personally summoned Stafford to his office, presenting him with a profound literary work authored by Marian Wright Edelman entitled “The Measure of our Success.” Empowered by this gesture, Stafford’s thirst for knowledge and growth intensified.
With his triumph at McCook under his belt, Stafford’s ambitions led him to secure admission at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. His purpose was to fulfill the curriculum requirements mandated by the state of Texas, ultimately paving his way into the esteemed Nursing Program at Prairie View A&M University.
With unwavering determination and an indomitable spirit, Stafford’s journey at Texas Southern University led him to secure a full-time position as a phlebotomist at American Plasma Center, Inc., igniting the foundation for his own venture, C.P. Plasma Center, Inc. While still employed at American Plasma, Stafford embarked on a new path by enrolling in the prestigious Paramedic program at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas.
In 1996, halfway through completing the demanding Paramedic program, fate dealt Stafford a cruel blow. He fell victim to a carjacking incident, enduring a broken jaw as he stared fearlessly down the barrel of a gun. Determined to overcome adversity, Stafford made the courageous decision to leave behind his life in Houston, Texas, and return to his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. There, he resolved to complete his Nursing degree at Georgia State University.
Stafford’s professional journey continued to evolve. He took on roles as a phlebotomist, lab technician, and eventually a supervisor at Sera-Tec, Inc. It was during this time that Stafford’s profound understanding of the vital role blood plasma plays in human health truly crystallized. Recognizing the critical importance of this field, he became deeply committed to combating systemic racism and monopolistic practices within the U.S. Plasma collection industry.
During the 2015-2016 Georgia General Assembly, Stafford, despite being a non-politician, demonstrated an authoritative presence by authoring a resolution that strongly advocated for the establishment of minority-owned plasma centers. This resolution, known as SR74, successfully navigated its way through the Georgia State Senate, despite initial reservations and skepticism.
Lacking legal representation, Stafford was left with no alternative but to undertake the arduous task of familiarizing himself with antitrust laws and civil law. To accomplish this, he dedicated himself to extensive research in the law libraries of prominent institutions such as Georgia State University, Emory, and the Northern District Court.
For the past eight years, Stafford has persistently fought for justice within the confines of the Georgia Northern District court. Though he did not emerge victorious in the Federal Court, Stafford has boldly challenged the decision of the District court by appealing to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in 2023.
Unfazed by setbacks, Stafford remains resolute and prepared to pursue his legal battle all the way to the United States Supreme Court. His motto, “Challenge Everything,” exemplifies his unwavering determination to question the status quo and fight for what he believes is right.
Sheila Stafford firmly believes in the transformative power of their program. “We trust this program will leave a lasting impact on the youth in this community,” she said. “We anticipate seeing the youth, who may have made some mistakes in the past, realize that consistently making good choices will enrich their lives beyond what they imagined before joining the Stafford Boxing Club.”
Sheila added, “We hope that they will continue to apply the lessons they’ve learned here throughout their lives. We want them to take these teachings to heart and continue to grow in their middle school years and beyond.”
On March 29, 2023, the mentoring program of the Stafford Boxing Club received an outstanding recognition: a U.S. House Proclamation declaring it as the Stafford Boxing Club Day in Lithonia, Georgia. This remarkable achievement highlights the club’s exceptional work with the youth in the community.

As a Black Republican who is deeply committed to bipartisan efforts and positive change within the Black community, I understand the historical injustices and systemic barriers that have contributed to the wealth disparities between Black and White Americans. The legacy of slavery, segregation, and discriminatory practices has had a profound and lasting impact on the economic opportunities available to Black Americans, and addressing these disparities is a crucial part of building a more equitable society.
Embracing Power: Childhood, a time meant to be cherished, became an arduous journey for Furquan Stafford, riddled with nightmares. Amidst the throes of adversity, Stafford’s father, a victim of heroin addiction, tragically lost his life on June 6, 1972, a month before Stafford’s birth on July 6, 1972. As if fate had dealt an unkind hand, Stafford endured a tumultuous upbringing, perpetually displaced between households due to the presence of a physically abusive stepfather.
The severity of the abuse escalated to unfathomable levels, etching a haunting memory into young Stafford’s existence. In the second grade, he was subjected to a brutal whipping with an extension cord, leaving his delicate white T-shirt clinging to his wounded back. Incapacitated by pain, he lay motionless, unable to rise and partake in the customary pledge of allegiance with his classmates. In a show of compassion, the school’s nurse, principal, and teacher rallied around Stafford, guiding him to the sanctuary of the nurse’s office, where his blood-soaked shirt was tenderly removed. The echoes of agony reverberated through his soul, affecting all who bore witness to his anguish. The collective grief was palpable, with tears streaming down the faces of those present.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the school promptly contacted Child Protective Services (CPS), marking the pivotal moment when Stafford was liberated from the confines of his mother’s home. Hope flickered within him, anticipating a newfound solace, but alas, it was merely the prelude to yet another harrowing chapter. Circulated from one abusive foster home to another, Stafford found no respite from the cycle of torment that plagued his young life.
Empowered by his upbringing in a vibrant, close-knit community nestled within a bustling urban district, Furquan Stafford emerged from the challenges of economic adversity and social constraints. In this dynamic environment, marked by a lack of attention and plagued by mental and emotional strain, Stafford hails as a true product of Houston, Texas, and College Park, Georgia. Today, he stands tall as a testament to the triumph of the human spirit, having carved an extraordinary path as an entrepreneur and emerged as an influential figure—a beacon of hope and inspiration for countless young minds and individuals of African descent.

Stafford’s background is a testament to his unwavering ambition and his willingness to make whatever sacrifices necessary to achieve his goals. He openly acknowledges that during times of financial hardship, he did whatever it took to make ends meet and forge ahead towards his dreams. Even when faced with minimal resources, he transformed an ironing board into his makeshift desk and a humble milk crate into his seat, refusing to let circumstances hinder his progress.
Since those early days, Stafford has devoted his entire life to shedding light on the issues of systemic racism and monopoly practices within the U.S. Plasma collection industry. His tireless efforts have earned him recognition as a respected researcher and esteemed fellow in the realm of blood plasma.
Stafford was bestowed with a prestigious recognition by the U.S. House of Representatives for his exceptional and influential service to the people of Georgia. The Honorable Henry C. “Hank” Johnson emphasized that Dr. Charles R. Drew’s groundbreaking contributions to medical innovation and life-saving endeavors have been globally acknowledged. However, Stafford has wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to carry forward Dr. Charles R. Drew’s legacy by promoting plasma donations through C.P. Plasma Center, Inc.

The Honorable Henry C. “Hank” Johnson further expressed the immense pride felt by the State of Georgia in having Stafford, a person characterized by unwavering determination and a compassionate spirit akin to that of an angel. Additionally, the Honorable Henry C. “Hank” Johnson commemorated Furquan Stafford’s exceptional accomplishments and outstanding contributions by designating May 19, 2011, as a day to celebrate his achievements.
With a potent blend of dedication and strength, Furquan and Sheila Stafford are tirelessly contributing to the lives of selected at-risk youth. As the founders of the Stafford Boxing Club Mentoring Program (https://www.facebook.com/StaffordBoxingClub/), established in 2020, they are wielding boxing and other techniques to empower and uplift these young minds. Their mission is to enrich the academic and socio-emotional learning of these young individuals, a task they undertake with unwavering commitment.
Their journey began in uncertainty, but through prayer, they found their direction. They were led to the DeKalb County School District in Lithonia, Georgia, where they felt their skills and passion could be best utilized.
With the Stafford team at their side, these at-risk youth are learning invaluable lessons about education, financial literacy, confidence, decision-making, self-control, and mental toughness. The Stafford Boxing Club Mentoring Program has also teamed up with local representatives from Truist Bank, creating an opportunity for these young ones to learn about the importance of saving. The Staffords even partnered with Walmart and Laureus USA to provide hands-on, valuable lessons.
The Stafford Boxing Club Mentoring Program does not limit its reach to the school premises. They extend their support to the homes of these at-risk youth, providing food through their partnership with Feeding Georgia Families. Both Sheila and Stafford have witnessed significant improvements in the academic and behavioral aspects of the youth in their program.
“We see enhanced confidence, improved testing results, and heightened respect for themselves and others,” said Stafford. “We’ve received feedback from parents who noticed a positive change in their child’s behavior at home. Overall, we are proud to say that the Stafford Boxing Club Mentoring Program has made a significant impact.”
Moreover, on November 19, 2023, the Stafford family was honored with a prestigious Georgia 4th Congressional Unsung Hero award, recognizing them as unsung heroes. This recognition further exemplifies their excellent contributions and remarkable impact on their community.
We stand at the crossroads of a leadership transformation, a shift towards an inclusive, balanced, and diverse representation. As a Black Republican candidate for District 10, I urge you to consider the potential of this change. We must move beyond viewing candidates through the lens of race or political affiliation alone. We must consider their ability to effectively represent their constituents. Here are three reasons why electing a Black Republican could be a game-changer for District 10:
